Top 5 Things to Do in Madison This Week: December 16, 2024

Solstice, scavengers, skates, tunes and more

By Aaron Seligman, MacaroniKID Madison publisher December 16, 2024

Every week, Macaroni KID Madison highlights free/low-cost ideas to do with kids in the Madison area in addition to the events in our newsletter. Click the links for all the details.

This week has plenty of  holiday activities, and highlights include:

  1. Tunes in the Terminal. Holiday music, open space to roam, escalators, and seeing airplanes? The Dane County Airport has different local groups at varying times all week, plus a community singalong Saturday.
  2. Celebrate the solstice. The shortest day of the year is long on fun - on Saturday join neighborhood celebrations and bonfires at Glenwood Park and Olbrich Park, and make music to celebrate in Middleton
  3. Monroe St. Scavenger hunt. It's never too cold for ice cream. Wander Monroe St. to find elves hidden on doors and buildings AND get a Chocolate Shoppe treat!
  4. Drop in/drop off.  With winter break coming, there are plenty of fun drop-in classes and kid drop-offs (see our guide), and this week the Little Gym has a baby holiday party, the Curious Crafter has drop in  clay ornaments, Garver Feed Mill brings back a week of parent-kid happy hours, Wisco Kidz has a Friday holiday party to burn off some energy.
  5. Skating Season. The lakes aren't frozen yet, but you can skate free Tuesday night at the River Rink in Monona, with the Grinch on the roller rink at the Edgewater Wednesday, and Friday evening in Middleton with santa, holiday movies, and more.

The family fun continues all year with our  experiences discount card  - makes a great and easy gift, and supports kids wellness through Tri 4 Schools! Plus get tickets to see this week's Nutcracker with Dance Wisconsin, the Little Matchstick Girl with Central Midwest Ballet.

What did we miss? You can add events to our calendar (it's free!) and contact us about promoting your event or organization.
