Area libraries are fun anytime of the year with free, interesting, and accessible programs for kids of all ages. This summer, check out books, along with special programs to encourage reading and engagement whether on a road trip, hot day, or just for fun.

DeForest Public Library:

The DeForest Public Library, along with most others in this list, are offering a summer reading challenge, with the theme of “Adventure Begins!” They offer this program, split into four sections:

  • Explorers are reading picture and early reader books.
  • Globetrotters are reading chapter books.
  • Thrill-Seekers are school-age kids reading teen and adult books.
  • Trekkers are adults reading teen and adult books.

Participants can earn “Dragon Dollars” and visit the prize store!

Sun Prairie Public Library:

The adventure continues at the Sun Prairie Public Library! The more you read, the more prizes you earn! Complete 75 books and a certain amount of reading hours to earn exciting prizes, and a pass to the Library Pool Party in August!

There are also special programs for teens and preteens all summer long! This includes the Anime Club and Teen Creativity Club.

Madison Public Library:

This summer, stop into any Madison Public Library, or on the Dream Bus and grab a “WE READ” tote bag! Fill it up with your favorite library books! Not sure what to read? Ask a librarian! They would be happy to provide recommendations for kids. And they've got lots of play areas for too-hot or rainy days.

McFarland Public Library:

In June and July, the library is offering TWO weekly storytimes! On Mondays at 9:30am, Outdoor Storytime at Lewis Park, and on Tuesdays at 9:30am, there is a storytime for all ages inside the library.

Additionally, there is a drama camp taking place Friday mornings at 9:30, 10:30, and 11:30am. Kids can sign up for their grade level, and participate in the Grand Finale show on July 25th!

Monona Library:

All ages are encouraged to participate in the Monona Library’s reading challenge! After ten days of reading, you can spin the wheel to win a prize, and after twenty days, you can win even more awesome prizes!

This library is also running a teen volunteer program! Teens can apply to volunteer at various events at the library throughout the summer.

Verona Public Library:

The Verona Library is also seeking teens to volunteer during the summer. You can gain volunteer hours and experience, and help assist with their summer reading challenge. The summer reading challenge is open to all ages.

Plus, on June 15th and 29th, you can come to the library to read to a dog!

Stoughton Public Library:

Use your reading log to earn prizes, plus see their special programs and storytimes throughout the summer.

Fitchburg Library:

The Fitchburg Summer Reading Programs runs from June 10th to August 3rd

The library will offer reading challenges for adults, teens, readers and pre-readers, created using the Beanstack platform. Patrons will have the chance to earn badges and prizes while reading throughout the summer!
