Description
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day, June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom and achievement while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures.
The McFarland Equity Project's Juneteenth celebration aims to honor this significant moment in history while fostering community unity and education. Through free food, speakers, kids' activities, and more, they provide a space for people to come together, learn, and celebrate the progress made towards equality while acknowledging the work still to be done.
This is a jointly planned event between the Black Student Union (BSU) and the McFarland Equity Project. The purpose is to celebrate and acknowledge the history of Juneteenth through a community event. We will share a meal, learn from the presenters, and enjoy family activities. There is no cost, except for purchases from the Quick Chef food truck if wanted, and freewill donations for the meal, which will go to the BSU. All are welcome!
