Grab your red hats and bundle up, because the Scandihoovian Winter Festival is back, and it’s going to be a lutefisk-loving, troll-tastic good time! Mark your calendars for February 8 and 9, 2025, and get ready to embrace the best of winter with a dash of Scandinavian flair.


This year’s festival promises all your favorite frosty fun, from traditional Scandihoovian games to mouthwatering Nordic treats. Whether you’re competing in the Scandi-Fatty Fat Tire Bike Race, tossing a Frozen Turkey, or cheering on participants at the Community Spelling Bee, there’s something for everyone at this whimsical celebration of winter.

Don’t Forget Your Red Hat! Show your Scandihoovian spirit by donning a signature red hat. You can snag one online or stop by the Mount Horeb Welcome Center (300 E Main St, Mount Horeb) to pick one up. What’s Happening? Prepare yourself for:

  • Fat Tire Bike Race – Test your mettle in this one-of-a-kind race with 2.5-mile, 5-mile, or 10-mile courses. Registration starts at 9:00 AM, and the race kicks off at 10:00 AM at the Norsk Golf Club, 2755 Golf Bowl Rd. Spectators are welcome to enjoy a Bloody Mary at the club's restaurant.
  • Create Your Own Viking Helmet – Unleash your inner Viking and craft a Viking helmet! You can drop in any time between 9:00 AM and 5:00PM at the Mount Horeb Public Library to take part in this fun, hands-on activity for kids. All materials are provided, and the event is free!
  • Snow Sculptures – Marvel as artists transform blocks of snow into magnificent sculptures. Sculpting begins at 10:00 AM in the Evangelical Lutheran Church Yard, 315 E Main St. This event requires snow, so please check social media for updates.
  • Norwegian Kids' Games – Let the little trolls enjoy traditional games from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, next to the Snow Sculptures. Free for the whole family!
  • Scandinavian Baking Demonstrations – Learn how to make Krumkake and Waffles on a Stick at 10:00 AM, and Lefse at 2:00 PM, presented by Sons of Norway Vennelag 513, the Mount Horeb Lion's Club, and the Driftless Historium. Learn techniques for baking these traditional Norwegian delicacies, and maybe even have a taste, at the Historium’s Kalscheur Community Room, 100 S Second St. 
  • Community Spelling Bee – Think you've got what it takes? Match wits with other great spellers in this friendly competition starting at 1:00 PM at Martinson Hall at Buck & Honey's, 108 S Second St. It's $15 to compete and free to watch (suggested donation of $2 per person for audience members). Must be 18+ to compete.
  • Frozen Turkey Bowling – Test your skills on the ice by bowling with a frozen turkey! The competition starts at 4:00 PM at Garfield Park Ice Rink, 101 E Garfield St. Free for the whole family! This event requires snow, so please check back for updates.
