Top 5 Things to Do in Madison This Week: October 14, 2024

Science fest, night market, Halloween fun begins, hikes, hayrides, and books

By Aaron Seligman, MacaroniKID Madison publisher October 14, 2024

Every week, Macaroni KID Madison highlights free/low-cost ideas to do with kids in the Madison area in addition to the events in our newsletter. Click the links for all the details.

  1. Wisconsin Science Fest + Bio Blitz. All week long, check out amazing discovery opportunities to celebrate curiosity with activities all over the city, and go on a "bio blitz" to find species in the environment  using the inaturalist app.
  2. Final night market. As part of the science fest, come out Thursday evening for the Science on the Square/Night Market fusion for a bunch of free outdoor STEM-themed activities, demonstrations, and more.
  3. Halloween fun begins. We've still got half of October, but the trunks, treats, pumpkins and other spooky fun has already begun in Waunakee and Fitchburg (Wednesday) and on the farm (Saturday), along with trunk or treats in Stoughton, Middleton, and East Madison - or drop the kids off at the Little Gym, or Sunday in south Madison or  Oregon. And  get excited for two especially BIG family fun Halloween events at Hilldale (10/27) and Downtown Madison (10/30)
  4. Hayrides and hikes. Cherokee Marsh has hay rides, activities, scavenger hunt plus hot drinks and a campfire Saturday afternoon. It's one of our favorite hiking spots  for good reason - plenty to see for all ages and a mix of flat, hilly, water, prairie, and woods to hike. And see our full guide for more trails and park ideas.
  5. Favorite book events.  It's the Wisconsin book festival  - with an author visit and free book "Lola" Saturday, plus see area libraries for some of our favorite book series like Dog Man in Verona (Thursday), and read and explore a fire truck in Monona (Friday) and  Star Wars in Sun Prairie (Saturday)

AND there is lots more family fun this fall, including our fall farm guide and Olbrich's GLEAM, see our full calendar.

What did we miss? You can add events to our calendar (it's free!) and contact us about promoting your event or organization.
