Next Tuesday Disney Jr.'s Costumepalooza tour is coming to Madison. The show is going to be great! How do I know? We saw a similar show last year and my kids loved it so much they wanted to go again this year. Why? Five good reasons:
- Disney brings it. From the costumes, music, dancing, stunts, sound quality, pre-show countdown - and above all the ENERGY of all the performers. They really know what'd they're doing and it shows. There's a mix of characters in costumes and dancers and others in colorful dress to show a good variety.
- Great timing. Yes, it's a school night. But things moved along so well and held the kids' attention. I know some kid shows go too far the other way and are just manic flashes of color and sound, this wasn't that. They introduced a lot of characters but with time to get excited and meet them. Video screens helped with a few effects but weren't overwhelming and it definitely wasn't too loud.
- Something for everyone. My kids only really knew a few of the characters going in, but it's not like there are overly complex backstories here Each has fun theme song, and a loose but understandable plot held it together for the older kids wondering where things were going, and the younger ones were happy to meet each new friend.
- Arts appreciation. Especially post-Covid, introducing kids to the idea of theater and live shows can be a challenge. They may have been used to seeing things on screens, so seeing grownups doing dress-up and learning to see and appreciate a show (again, one that is 100% kid-friendly), helps get them used to the show experience. They'll also be better prepared when you want to expose them to others kinds of shows, arts, music, and other cultural activities to know they've enjoyed it already.
- Dance party! Especially as the weather gets colder, a good excuse to dance and get out the wiggles is always welcome. It's another way for kids to appreciate a live performance to feed on the energy of others and shake it out!
