Check out your local library for tons of free resources

By Lynn Montague, Sun Prairie Library September 18, 2023

Did you know September is Library Card Sign-Up Month? If you haven’t already, this is a great time to get involved with your local library and check out all the great services it offers your community!

From borrowing books, ebooks, audiobooks (and more!) to learning new skills to attending a storytime or club, a library card helps everyone do more of what they enjoy – for free!

Interested in trying out a new language?  The library can help – not only with books, but also with access to a variety of language learning databases! Interested in digital materials to download to your device? Your library card gives you them for free!  Take a peek at Wisconsin’s Digital Library – you may have heard it called Overdrive or Libby. Tumble Book Library is another fun resource that focuses solely on kids!  Rather than downloaded to a device, readalongs, audiobooks, videos and games stream right from the website or the app.  Another cool feature of Tumble Book is the books in Spanish and French! Is your child or teen looking for their next great read (and the librarian isn’t available?) Try searching Novelist K-8! This database can help with read-alikes, genre suggestions, Lexile and other reading levels, book reviews, and more! These are just a few of the many databases available for free…with your library card!

Every library in Dane County offers SO many amazing storytimes and other programs! Check them out and see for yourself! Not sure which library is closest to you?  Check out this map of all the libraries in South Central Library System (SCLS)! The libraries in SCLS work together in to share books and other materials, and collaborate in other ways as well. You can visit any of them and check out materials with your library card!

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-Up Month has been held in September to mark the beginning of the school year. The campaign started as a response to then Secretary of Education William Bennett, who stated “Let’s have a campaign…Every child should obtain a library card and use it.”

Do you have a library card?  If not, September is a great month to get one! If you do have one, bring it to the library and put it to use!
